General Skilled Migration GSM apply for migrant skilled workers who want to immigrate to Australia.There are three different visas for skilled migrant workers:

  1. Skilled Independent Visa (subclass 189)
  2. Skilled Nominated Visa (subclass 190)
  3. Skilled Work Regional (Provisional) Visa (subclass 491)

Process to apply for a General Skilled Migration Visa: 

The first step to apply for a General Skilled Migration GSM Visa is to submit an Expression of Interest (EOI) through Skillselect system with details of your nominated occupation, skills and qualifications. After the Expression of Interest submitted, the applicant may be invited to apply for the visa if ranked high enough. He/she will then have 60 calendar days to apply for the visa. Department will then process your visa application. The applicant will receive an invitation to apply for the visa if there are places available for your nominated occupation and applicant rank high enough in applicant points score.

Skilled Independent Visa (subclass 189)

This Visa only applies to skilled migrant workers who are not sponsored by an employer, a relative or nominated by the Australian State or Territory.
It allows applicants to live as well as work in Australia as a permanent resident.

Criteria’s:

  • Applicant must receive invitation letter to apply for the visa
  • The applicant’s profession must be on the relevant  list of eligible skilled occupations.
  • Applicant must have relevant skills assessment for nominated occupation.
  • Be under 45 years old.
  • Applicant must meet the score specified in the invitation letter based on the factors in the points test. This scope will be 65 or more.
  • Applicant must have Competent level in English.
  • Applicant must meet health and character requirements.

Skilled Nominated Visa (subclass 190)

This Visa applies to skilled migrant workers who have passed the point test and who are also nominated by the Australian State or Territory government.
It allows applicants to live and work in Australia as a permanent resident.

Criteria’s:

  • Applicant must receive invitation letter to apply for the visa
  • The applicant’s profession must be on the relevant  list of eligible skilled occupations.
  • Applicant must have relevant skills assessment for nominated occupation.
  • Applicant must be under 45 years old.
  • Applicant must meet the score specified in the invitation letter based on the factors in the points test. This scope will be 65 or more.
  • Applicant must have Competent level in English.
  • Applicant must be nominated by the Australian State or Territory
  • Applicant must meet health and character requirements.

Skilled Work Regional (Provisional) Visa (subclass 491)

This Visa applies to skilled migrant workers and their families who want to live, work and study in a regional or low-population growth metropolitan areas of Australia for up to five years.
Visa Highlights:

  • Visa Granted for 5 years
  • It will come with regional condition “Conditions 8578, 8579, 8580 and 8581 apply to all visa holders (primary and secondary). These conditions specify that all Subclass 491 visa holders must live, work and study only in a designated regional area and must notify the Department of changes of address and other details.
  • It Can be Sponsored by State (MTLLT or STLLT).

Criteria’s for invited pathway:

  • Applicant must receive invitation letter to apply for the visa
  • The applicant’s profession must be on the relevant list of eligible skilled occupations.
  • Applicant must have relevant skills assessment for nominated occupation.
  • Applicant must be under 45 years old.
  • Applicant must meet the score specified in the invitation letter based on the factors in the points test. This scope will be 65 or more.
  • Applicant must have a Competent level in English.
  • Applicant must be nominated by the Australian State or Territory or sponsored by a relative.
  • Applicant must meet health and character requirements.

If Sponsored by Eligible Relative Sponsor

  • Applicants through the family sponsored pathway can only nominate occupations on the MLTSSL
  • Sponsor is usually resident in a designated regional area; and
  • Sponsor is related to the primary applicant or the primary applicant’s spouse or de facto partner (if the primary applicant’s spouse or de facto partner is also an applicant for a Subclass 491 visa) as: a parent, child, step-child, brother, sister, adoptive brother, adoptive sister, step-brother, step-sister, aunt, uncle, adoptive aunt, adoptive uncle, step-aunt, step-uncle, nephew, niece, adoptive nephew, adoptive niece, step-nephew, step-niece, grandparent or first cousin; and
  • Sponsor has sponsored each member of the family unit of the primary applicant who is also an applicant for a Subclass 491 visa.

If Sponsor by State or Territory

Check Individual tabs for State and Territory Sponsorship Requirements. For State/Territory nominated applicants, this is the MLTSSL, the Short-Term Skilled Occupation List (STSOL) and the Regional Occupation List (ROL) and a State/Territory Occupations List.

Conversion to Permanent Residency

  • It is possible to apply for a permanent Subclass 191 Permanent Residence (Skilled Regional) visa after living and working in a regional area for at least 3 years. Applicants must meet certain income requirements, and be able to prove their residence in regional Australia for the 3-year period.
  • Applicants should also note that there are restrictions on applying for other permanent visas, such as the 189, 190, or 820 Partner visa until they have held the 491 for the three year period.
